Franklyn Froideveaux was a patient of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He seemed to have had an obsession with Hannibal, following him and trying to catch his attention in an attempt to become his friend. Before he became a patient under Hannibal's care, Franklyn had been referred to nine different psychiatrists, suffering from severe neurosis.
Franklyn explained his attraction to glamorous figures - such as Lecter and(in his own fantasies) Michael Jackson - as "wanting to touch greatness", though he denied any sort of sexual component to this obsessive behavior. For him, being alone came with a 'dull ache', causing Lecter to privately reflect on his own newfound bond with Will Graham. Dr. Lecter noted that Franklyn may be attracted to psychopaths, considering his friendships with at least two killers (Although Dr. Lecter naturally did not clarify that he was including himself in that speculation).
Franklyn appeared to be financially well-off, attempting to emulate Hannibal by dressing in bespoke three-piece suits and engraining himself into high-society dining and events such as the opera. When Jack Crawford first visited Hannibal's office, he presumed Franklyn *was* the 'Dr. Lecter' he'd come to meet, though Hannibal politely corrected Jack before Franklyn could respond one way or the other.
Franklyn's best friend was Tobias Budge, though Budge did not echo Franklyn's feelings.
Franklyn was killed by Hannibal when Tobias Budge confronted them both in Hannibal's office. Notably, Lecter attempted to spare Franklyn's life two separate times, first asking Tobias not to murder the man during a previous dinner, and later telling Franklyn to flee the office during Tobias' attack - Tobias knew Lecter was the Chesapeake Ripper, and Lecter knew Franklyn could not be allowed to hear this. However, Franklyn stayed and attempted to assure Tobias that all would be well, regardless of the choices that had been made. As Tobias prepared to tell the Franklyn the truth about Dr. Lecter, Lecter stepped up behind Franklyn and broke his neck. In doing so, he also deprived Tobias of the satisfaction of killing him himself. After a struggle occurred between the two remaining men, the fight ended with Tobias' death, and he was then framed easily for Franklyn's demise.

- Mads Mikkelsen stated in an interview, that Franklyn wasn't killed for being rude, but he was just "a dumbass".
- Franklyn seems to be an homage to Benjamin Raspail from the books and films, as Raspail was likewise a socialite and patient of Lecter's, who had a relationship with another serial killer who tanned his victim's hides in a basement, and was ultimately killed by Lecter after one too many unproductive therapy sessions.
